CORRECTION TO THE
APPLE IIE CARD OWNER’S GUIDE
Please mark the following correction in the Apple IIe Card Owner’s Guide:
• On page 148, in the last paragraph of step 10, scratch out the phrase "at least." You cannot have more than one Macintosh partition, as implied by the original wording.
GENERAL ADVICE
WHEN YOU SHOULD READ THIS SECTION: Read this section after you have finished installing the Apple IIe Card software and before you start using Apple II programs. If you go through the Apple IIe Card Owner’s Guide in order, a good time to read this section would be after you’re finished with Chapter 4. You might want to make a note at the end of Chapter 4 to remind yourself to read this section.
As you install your Apple IIe programs on your Macintosh LC and begin using them, keep the following points in mind:
• If you create an Apple IIe partition on your hard disk (as described in Chapter 2 of the Apple IIe Card Owner’s Guide), keep Macintosh programs on your Macintosh partition and Apple IIe programs on your Apple IIe partition.
• Don’t open the Option Panel while Apple IIe programs are printing. Sometimes opening the Option Panel can interrupt printing.
• If you use a Macintosh screen saver, be aware that it may interfere with Apple IIe programs while they are printing. If the screen saver causes a problem, turn off the screen saver or increase the amount of time before it turns on.
• The RAM disk is erased when you quit the Apple IIe environment.
• If you have the correct network software, you can log on to any network file server, though you cannot log on to a private Macintosh computer, even if it is sharing its files. (File sharing is a new feature in system 7 of Macintosh system software.)
• If you need to set up Apple IIe file servers and maintain networks, you should have the Apple IIe Workstation Card manual. See your Apple dealer for information on obtaining a copy.
• If you create an Apple IIe partition on your hard disk (as described in Chapter 1 of the Apple IIe Card Owner’s Guide), you will have two copies of the files BASIC.SYSTEM and PRODOS—one copy on your Macintosh partition and one copy on your Apple IIe partition. The copies on your Macintosh partition allow you to start Apple IIe programs by double-clicking their icons. The copies on your Apple IIe partition allow you to set the partition to be your Apple IIe startup volume.
• When printing Apple IIe documents, you will notice a pause before printing starts.
• Do not use more than four ProDOS partitions at once.
• If you add a new ProDOS partition, check the SmartPort portion of the Option Panel to make sure the old icons are still in the correct bins and the new icon is where you want it.
MORE TROUBLESHOOTING
WHEN YOU SHOULD READ THIS SECTION: Read this section if you have a problem using the Apple IIe Card or running Apple IIe programs and can’t find a solution in Appendix A of the Apple IIe Card Owner’s Guide.
AN APPLE IIE DOCUMENT STOPS PRINTING BEFORE IT SHOULD. Try one of the following two solutions:
• Don’t open the Option Panel while printing. Opening the Option Panel can interrupt printing.
• If you use a Macintosh screen saver, turn it off or increase the time before it turns on.
MY PRODOS DISK DOESN’T APPEAR ON THE MACINTOSH DESKTOP OR THE MACINTOSH SAYS THE DISK IS DAMAGED. If you insert a ProDOS disk while you’re in the Macintosh environment and it doesn’t appear on the desktop, try the following:
• Eject the disk and make sure it’s unlocked.
• Eject the disk and make sure it has at least 2K of free space on it. You can see how much free space it has by entering the Apple IIe environment and checking the disk’s directory.
AFTER LAUNCHING IIE STARTUP, MY SCREEN DISPLAYS BLOCKS OF DIFFERENT COLORS OR SHADES. This display of colors or shades is the Apple IIe Self Test. To quit the self-test and enter the Apple IIe environment, press Command-Control-Reset.
MY MODEM ISN’T WORKING PROPERLY. Go to the modem serial port or the printer serial port panel in the Option Panel--depending on which port your modem is attached to--and try turning on the "Interrupts" feature in the Port Characteristics portion of the panel.
I’M A FLOPPY DISK STARTUP PERSON AND SOMETIMES I HAVE TROUBLE LAUNCHING MACINTOSH PROGRAMS AFTER I’VE STARTED UP FROM THE IIE STARTUP DISK. Make sure the IIe Startup disk has not been ejected before you launch the program.
I JUST INSTALLED SYSTEM 7 AND THE APPLE IIE PARTITION ON MY HARD DISK DISAPPEARED. The partition and the files are still there, but you need to follow these steps to make them visible again:
1. Shut down your Macintosh.
2. Insert the IIe Installer Disk.
3. Turn on your Macintosh.
4. Open the IIe Installer Disk by double-clicking its icon.
5. Open the HD SC Setup program by double-clicking its icon.
6. Click the Update button.
7. If you have more than one hard disk, click the Drive button and then the Update button for each hard disk.
8. Click Quit.
9. Choose Restart from the File menu.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN USING THE APPLE IIE CARD
AND USING AN APPLE IIE COMPUTER
In most respects, there are no differences between the Apple IIe environment on the Macintosh and an Apple IIe computer. A few distinctions are described in the Apple IIe Card Owner’s Guide. Here is one more:
• On the Apple IIe, the IIe RAM disk is erased whenever you turn off the computer. On the Macintosh, the IIe RAM disk is erased whenever you quit the Apple IIe environment.
USING A STYLEWRITER PRINTER
WHO SHOULD READ THIS SECTION: Read this section only if you have a StyleWriter printer and you are a floppy disk startup person. (You determine if you are a floppy disk startup person in Chapter 2 of the Apple IIe Card Owner’s Guide.)
If you’re a floppy disk startup person, you won't have the necessary software on the IIe Startup Disk to use your StyleWriter printer. The instructions in Appendix E, “Installing Printer Software for the IIe Startup Disk,” ask you to follow the instructions in the StyleWriter manual to install the software. Unfortunately, the installation method described there requires more disk space than is available on the IIe Startup Disk.
When you get to "Installing the Software for Your Printer" on page 153 of the Apple IIe Card Owner’s Guide, stop and follow these steps. (You might want to put a note on that page to remind yourself.)
1. Throw away the extra printer files on the IIe Startup Disk, as described in steps 1-5 on page 153 of the Apple IIe Card Owner’s Guide.
2. Find the disks that came with your StyleWriter printer.
3. Find the TrueType file and StyleWriter printer file on the StyleWriter disks. At the time this Read Me document was written, both files were on the StyleWriter Installation disk in the StyleWriter Software folder. Make sure both icons are visible on the screen. Their icons look like this:
4. Eject the StyleWriter disk by choosing the Eject command from the File menu. (If you have System 7, the Eject command is in the Special menu.) The disk is ejected and its icon and windows are dimmed.
5. Insert your copy of the IIe Startup Disk.
6. Open the IIe Startup Disk by double-clicking its icon.
7. Arrange the windows so you can see both the System Folder icon on the IIe Startup Disk and the StyleWriter printer file icon.
8. Drag the TrueType and StyleWriter icons into the System Folder icon and insert disks as requested.
9. Choose Shut Down from the Special menu.
10. Insert the IIe Startup Disk.
11. Click the Restart button.
12. Choose Eject from the File menu.
13. Insert the TrueType Fonts disk.
14. Open the disk by double-clicking its icon.
15. Open the TrueType Fonts suitcase file by double-clicking its icon. Its icon looks like this:
The Font/DA Mover screen is displayed, as shown in step 21.
16. Click Open. The Open dialog box is displayed.
17. Click Eject. The TrueType Fonts disk is ejected.
18. Insert the IIe Startup Disk.
19. Double-click the name System Folder in the Font/DA Mover dialog box.
20. Double-click the name System in the dialog box. The fonts in the System file are displayed in the right-hand box of the Font/DA Mover dialog box.
21. While holding down the Shift key, click once on each of the following two fonts in the left-hand box: regular Courier and bold Courier. You may have to use the scroll bar to see all the fonts. If you also have Monaco in the left-hand box, hold down the Shift key and click that too. When you're done, your screen should look something like this (though if you have more fonts you won't be able to see them all at once):
22. Click Copy. Switch disks as requested. The new fonts are copied to the IIe Startup Disk.
23. Click Quit.
24. Choose Restart from the File menu.
25. When you’re finished, select the printer in the Chooser, as described in “Setting Up the Printer Software” in Chapter 2 of the Apple IIe Card Owner’s Guide.
NETWORK PRINTING
WHO SHOULD READ THIS SECTION: Read this section if you use a printer connected over a network.
WHEN YOU SHOULD READ THIS SECTION: Read this section after you have finished installing the Apple IIe Card software and before you start using Apple II programs. If you go through the Apple IIe Card Owner’s Guide in order, a good time to read this section would be after you’re finished with Chapter 4. You might want to make a note at the end of Chapter 4 to remind yourself to read this section.
In most cases, you should print using the Printer Card. However, some Apple IIe programs may require you to print using the AppleShare card. If so, you can select which printer you want using the Apple IIe program Chooser.II. (If you don’t use Chooser.II, the Apple IIe prints to the printer selected in the Macintosh Chooser, so long as the printer is either a network ImageWriter or a network LaserWriter.)
HOW TO PRINT THIS READ ME FILE
To print this Read Me file, follow these steps:
1. Finish the installation instructions in Chapters 1 and 2 of the Apple IIe Card Owner’s Guide.
2. Restart your computer. If you have a hard disk, start up from the hard disk. If not, start up from any of your usual startup disks. Do NOT start up from the IIe Installer disk.
3. Insert the IIe Installer Disk.
4. Open the IIe Installer Disk by double-clicking its icon.
5. Open the Read Me file by double-clicking its icon.
